This month we'll be hearing from two artists who work with sound, public art and the sense of place.

Perri Howard

Perri Howard is a Seattle-based artist. Her work examines the relationship between human perception and sense of place. Issues of navigation, intuition, and physical proximity are key components of these investigations. Through combined techniques in sound, light, sculpture, and image, Perri explores many attributes of a place simultaneously.

In addition to her studio practice and public artworks, Perri performs with the Seattle Phonographers Union and has conducted research in South India as a Fulbright Scholar. Since receiving her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2001, she has served as a visiting artist at many colleges and universities and completed sound-based residencies in Portugal, Italy, and The Amazon. Her favorite instrument is a hand-held compass.

Ellen Sollod

Ellen Sollod is a multidisciplinary artist whose interest in perception—visual and aural—led her to alternative photography, anachronistic methods of capturing imagery and audio recording. In addition to her studio work, she makes large scale site-specific work for parks, plazas, hospitals, educational and transportation facilities and infrastructure. She recently completed "Origami Tessellation" for Seattle's Mercer Corridor. She is currently working on transforming a transmission pole into a work of art for Puget Sound Energy and a "floating" stainless steel mesh and convex mirror tensile structure for 12th Avenue Square Park.
